A Field of Dreams

The City of Angels Little League (CALL) has been chartered since 2001 as a youth baseball and softball program. CALL serves inner-city girls and boys, between the ages of 4-16, who reside South of Hollywood Boulevard, North of the 10 Freeway, East of La Brea Avenue and West of Vermont Avenue.

CALL’s mission is to create, repair and strengthen communities, through the vehicles of youth baseball and youth softball. To “Answer the CALL!” is to address the needs of hundreds of at-risk youth and their families. We provide solid role models, experienced coaching and active programming. We have enjoyed tremendous success, both on and off the playing field. We’ve enjoyed a steady stream of player and volunteer registrations. CALL has earned four (4) District 25, Tournament of Champions first-place banners, as well as championship titles at the District and Sectional All-Star levels. As the recipients of generous financial support from families, friends and local business, we have been truly blessed!

These achievements have been wrought in the absence of a home field. For more than ten (10) years, every practice, game, banquet and fundraiser have taken place on a myriad of “foreign” facilities. Through paid permits, we have used facilities owned by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the Los Angeles Unified School District (“LAUSD”). Several “sister” Little Leagues within California District 25, including Culver Marina and Ladera Little Leagues, have also been instrumental to our programming. These leagues have allowed us to “inter-league,” playing games on their fields. We have earned the dubious title, “Homeless Little League.” With your help, we’d like to begin a new phase of our history, one centered around brand-new, state-of-the-art playing fields. Our own “field of dreams.”

CALL has cultivated a dynamic partnership with LAUSD, illustrated by a Joint Use Agreement that empowers us to construct three (3) fields, all on LAUSD properties. Arlington Heights Elementary School and Cochran Middle School currently operate on adjacent properties. As indicated on the enclosed conceptual drawing, we will build a “Tee Ball/Rookie Field” at Arlington and two, full sized Little League fields, on the Cochran footprint. We are eagerly anticipating the player dugouts, stands and artificial turf fields. Finally, we have a “home, sweet home!"

This collaboration with LAUSD will provide the opportunity for CALL to serve more than 1,000 children. Currently, 100% of these satisfy the criteria for the federal free lunch program. For these students, having “real” Little League facilities within walking distance, centered at their schools, presents tremendous opportunities for physical, mental and spiritual growth.

Having centrally located home fields means we will be able to train, practice and play, both baseball and softball, in an increasingly consistent and convenient manner. Our players, their families and the community at large will be able to participate in the Skills Clinics, Coaches’ Training, and Community Health Fairs we have sponsored in the past. With a continual youth mentoring program, neighborhood clean-up and private security personnel, we will be certain to maintain the integrity of these precious fields and are protected at all times. It will be more convenient than ever to “Answer the CALL!”

The creation of these home facilities will require a significant financial investment. Having facilities in which people can take pride and ownership necessitates an investment of time, treasure and talent. We need your help, in order to meet our fiscal goals.
